World in Conflict

I just finished playing World in Conflict last night, and by god, that was awesome!

My first encounter with the game was the multi player demo that was released a month ago. I played a couple of games, but since it was a team game and no one cooperated I quickly lost interest even though it was a very awesome and new way of dealing with multi player RTS.

The game is set in the 1980s or something, and its the Americans versus the Russians. The whole game starts in medias res when the Russians invade Seattle and all hell breaks loose in the US. You, as a new commander fresh out of west point has to deal with the threat. The single player is awesome, with cut scenes both in game and out. You start by choosing what reinforcements you want to be dropped in your drop zone. You are awarded a certain number of reinforcement points throughout your missions. The effects are awesome, but it does require a fair bit of hardware.

As I mentioned the multi player was awesome. when joining a match you instantly take control over a certain part of an army. It can be an air division, tank division or infantry division, and you will have to call down reinforcements from one of these and help out your teammates kill the opposition.

It’s definatly worth a try!

Current projects and stuff

Well, Lots of stuff has happened since my last post.

I have started to work on the Insurgency mod. I took over the map ins_juris from Steppenwolf since he got a job at Grin (Stockholm) and figured he wouldn’t have time to work on side projects any more. I have put a lot of work into it, not as much as I think he has. I have retextured most of the map and fixed a lot or problems here and there, it has taken me a couple of weeks of hard work. The map is shaping up though, and I feel that I am ready to start working on a 3d skybox in the near future :) Congrats to steppenwolf also, for landing a job at the MapCore studios ;D

Anyways, I have put pvk_town on hold for the moment though, while I figure out where I want to go with it.. I am also playing with the idea of releasing hunted in its current form and shape.. maybe as a coop map for some coop mod.

later~

Some of you might have seen the very early screenshot of my pvk_town up at the PVK2 dev journal.

Anyways, I promised some screens in my last post, so here they are.

Hope this is pleasing for you. I’d be glad for any constructive criticism.

Oh happy days~

As many of you might know, I am attending Narvik University College.

We had our first day at school this semester today, and since this is my last year (I’m on 3/3) I had a pretty good idea of what would happen.. But I guess they managed to even surprise me this time.
We have an online schedule that shows where we attend classes, and we had some stupid Linux bullshit starting this time.. When we arrived, a teacher entered and started talking about a Linux course, and when he mentioned what book we were supposed to use we quickly discovered this was the introductionary course we had last year.. He quickly became embarrassed and left the room.. 5 minutes later another teacher entered and explained that the our schedule was all wrong because their administration hadn’t received our course plan. Uh? Alright, what the fuck have they been doing all summer?

It turned out that we are supposed to have 6 courses. 4 courses was listed on our schedule and of those only 2 were correct. We were just sent home after 20 minutes of bs.

But I found some positive in all of this. This year we are actually going to have the 3d modeling course, and to my big surprise we are actually going to use 3D Studio Max and Photoshop. I was expecting AutoCAD and msPaint, so I was positively surprised… We’ll have our first lesson in that course on Wednesday. I took a look at the first assignment, and it was the good old chess tutorial from max :D I guess it’s a good way to start…

I mentioned my new computer in the last post, and I have just reinstalled Vista to get the VTF shell extension to work. It might sound like a big deal for something so small, but trust me, when working with the source engine, its the small things that get to you and you’ll do whatever you can to fix them. Thanks to Wunderboy for helping me out on this one, mad props to him!

Also, expect some pictures of pvk_town to appear here (along with a new gallery, most likely) very soon :)

The New PC

August 19, 2007, 7:50 pm

I got my new PC the other day, and after a few bumps and bruises everything seems to be running.

The idea was that I would install Windows Vista 64 bit, because by now I guessed that there would be drivers out for it, especially since I was getting reasonably new hardware. Well, I was wrong. After inserting the CD for my new SoundBlaster XI-FI Gamers edition, it loaded, then prompted that it did not have drivers for my current version of Windows. What the fuck. A brand new soundcard, top of the line -> No driver for Vista on their Drivers disc?

After searching the web for a couple of minutes I found som recently released beta drivers, and they have worked alright for now, except my mic is dead.

During the first two days Vista was acting very weird. It would randomly freeze for about 30 seconds up to a minute, then run smoothly again.. This happened 3 or 4 times per day, but it seems to be over now. What is bothering me the most right now, though, is the fact that I for some weird reason can’t seem to play GRAW2. The first problem I encountered was that I could go past mission two, because after mission one was over the buttons for “Return to menu” and “Next mission” was ontop of eachother, and I could only select “Return to menu”, but I figured out a way around this by restarting the game and selecting continue.

But now, it’s just pissing me off. There is something very weird with how GRAW2 deals with memory, and it’s giving me bluescreens very randomly. After this happened 3 to 4 times in 10 minutes (??), I gave up on the game. GG.

Oh and, I’ve also tried out Overlord.. was fun for about 2-3 hours, but then became very repetitive.
